Hey fam–I’m keeping it real simple today. What memories, fads, clothes, etc., would you not like to see resurrected? I would like to see the free love of the 60’s stay in the past, although I’m nervous that we may be living in a similar era with advanced repercussions. I would like to see Karl Kani, Cross Colours and jeans tucked inside of three pairs of slouch sucks stay in the past. Ladies…finger waves, french rolls and leisure curls….AWAY!!! I would like Zoot suits and colored shoes to stay in the past (I’m not sure some of my Detroit old schoolers would agree…LOL!). The leather medallions with the African flag or colors…yeah let’s keep those tucked away. We can support Africa but let’s do it in a more fashionable way. What else? How about the terms such as, “bite me” or “my ni**a”"…AWAY! For me personally, memories of my first boyfriend…AWAY! AWAY! AWAY!
Talk to me fam…what can we leave buried in the past, never to rise again?

Long before the days of Melrose Place, 90210, The Hills or the The O.C., we had Dallas and Dynasty. Who remembers Wednesday nights with the Carrington’s in Colorado or Friday nights in Texas with the Ewings. I loved Dynasty for so many reasons, but seeing a black woman, Diahann Carrolle play wealthy diva, Dominque Deveraux was just the best. Linda Evans character “Krystyle” worked a nerve at times because she was so sensitive and somewhat of a cry baby, but seeing her have those fights with Alexis Carrington (she was a real “witch”) played by Joan Collins showed that she was not as timid as we thought. I remember watching the spin-off show the Colbys with my mom for a bit, but do not have have any significant memories of the show.
Now Dallas, male or female, people seemed to be into this prime time soap opera. I think J.R. Ewing (Larry Hagman) had a swagger that everyone hated but secretly admired. Not his underhanded behavior, but just the confidence he exuded. Bobby, the younger brother played by Patrick Duffy had the “good boy” image unlike J.R., but his story lines never seemed as interesting as J.R. Who could forget the Who Shot J.R. episode? It sure had my young butt glued to the t.v. We can’t forget other cast members like Linda Gray who played Sue Ellen, did she ever join an A.A. group? Victoria Principal who played Pam, Bobby’s wife or Priscilla Presley (Elvis’s widow) who played Jenna Wade, who in the 21st century we would call Bobby’s character’s “baby mama.” Dallas also had a spin off show called “Knots Landing” and this became a weekly favorite for me as well.
I think both of these shows were great and if they ran in syndication, I would be watching them both. Dallas or Dynasty???? I would not want to choose but if I had to…Dallas would win hands down.
What do you think?

How many of you have memories of carrying around your small brown paper bag full of penny candy? Did you actually have a penny candy store in the neighborhood or did you have a candy lady who sold candy from her home? Our neighborhood didn’t have a penny candy store, but every Friday when we went to visit my aunt and uncle in North Philly on 5th street I couldn’t wait to get out the car to run across the street and spend my 50 cents. It was a barber shop/candy store:-( Let’s see, I would buy bazooka bumble gum, frunas fruit chews, mary janes, sugar daddies, chick-o-sticks and I always had to get my ring pop. I would wear that ring and all day and take a quick lick here and there (kids know nothing about germs).
Did you guys have a neighborhood ice cream truck or candy store on wheels? Our neighborhood had Mr. Softy and Big Al’s. Mr. Softy pretty much specialized in ice cream and came around pretty early, but you could get Indian pumpkin seeds, fun dip, mike-n-ikes, grapeheads, appleheads or boston baked beans. Now Big Al (I don’t know if he was Italian or Irish) had a green truck, came when we should have been in the bed (I would listen from my window and sneak outside), smoked while he served the kids and cursed like a sailor…but he had all the goodies. I know it was an ice cream truck, but I can’t remember if he sold ice cream, but candy was definitely his specialty. He sold all the above mentioned candies, but he also had razzles, sixlets, bit-o-honey, bumble gum cigars and cigarettes (u-no the ones with the fake powder smoke). Those were the good ole days when a buck or two took a kid pretty far.
Candy buttons, candy necklaces, poprocks, clark bars, salted nut rolls, pez, black licorice dollars, Beaman’s chewing gum…too many to name!!!!
What are some of your childhood candy memories?

I’m amazed by how fashion trends and styles seem to reinvent themselves over the decades. The other day, I ran across a picture of me in some shell toe Adidas and wondered how many people wanted a pair of Adidas after RUN DMC made it look so fly. Growing up in Philly I remember being at a 76ers game and watching Dr. J in those Converse. We can’t forget about the sneakers that other athlete’s have made famous. Kareem Abdul Jabbar in his Adidas Superstar’s; Dominique Wilkins with the Reebok Pumps and how bout “Bo knows Best” and those orange and blue Bo Jackson sneaks. What can we say about Jordans? They will forever keep reinventing themselves, but those first pair…CLASSIC!
Just so many memories of the different sneakers we have seen over the years. Remember when they sold Pony’s and Chucks in the grocery store???? Now, Chucks are classic and come in every color. Who knew Laverne and Shirley ”skippies” would still be in Macy’s but a standard sneaker for Keds. I can remember seeing Fresh Prince getting out of a blue Iroc Z and he had the ”freshest” pair of Le Coq Sportif’s on his feet.
Anyone remember the white based Ellesse’s for women that had the “Ellesse” written in red and the other colors of the rainbow scattered about the sneaker…I loved those. One Easter my girlfriends and I all agreed to get a different color each of Reebok classics. I had purple and wore a purple/green Reebok Pump It Up tshirt with them. The rest of the girls had orange, mustard, red and green I think, to name a few (shout out to the Circle of 7).
Just too many for me to name….Lottos, Tretorns, Harlem Nikes and we can’t forget about our Midwest/West Coast family and their KSwiss!
Talk to me people…what were your favorite sneaks or those that you wanted but mom or pops just wouldn’t buy?
Hey Rich Life Fam/Friends! It’s that time once again to get our old skool discussion going. I had a conversation last week that prompted my topic for today.. I was asked by someone what my favorite movie was and I told them it was a toss up between Purple Rain (you guys will soon find out that I’m a HUGE Prince fan) and Krush Groove. The person I was talking with asked me what was Krush Groove. For those of you who don’t know me, I can be dramatic to say the least:-) I’m like…ARE YOU JOKING? Needless to say they were not.
As fate would have it not even 15 minutes later, “There’s No Stoppin Us” by Ollie & Jerry from the movie “Breakin” came on the XM Station “The Groove.” I asked this person if they had ever seen Breakin and that response was also a negative. My inquisitive self now wanted to know if they had ever seen “Wild Style” or “Beat Street”…you can guess what those responses were as well.
Here’s where I am today. A sista made a post last week after my Best Male R&B Group blog, suggesting that I stop criticizing and educate the younger generation. Although her suggestion is duly noted, the criticizing wellllllllllllll…that’s just the beauty of blogging and having your own soapbox. The education however that she referenced is very important. With that said, everyone who has not seen Krush Groove, Breakin (I’m not a fan a part II, Electric Boogaloo, but we can include it), Wild Style or Beat Street, PLEASE utilize Blockbuster, Hollywood Video or NetFlix and check them out. After checking them out post to this blog and let me know what you think.
If you have seen all or any of these movies, please post and share your memories, thoughts and which one you favor most.
For me…you already know I’m rollin with Krush Groove. Representing Russell Simmons “the godfather of hip hop” story of his start of Def Jam, this one is a classic and featured the heavy hitters of the rap game at the time. In 1985 who could have imagined that after starting a record label and releasing Krush Groove he would follow with clothing lines, a cable series, a strong presence in philanthropy efforts and a trend for others in not just hip hop but the African American community to follow.
Approximately 2 weeks ago, my cousin who is in her mid twenties, had the following Facebook post…”Who is the best male R&B group of all time?” I was disgusted by the answers that were posted by her Facebook friends. The answers included, but were not limited to, Jagged Edge, R. Kelly & Public Announcement, Boyz II Men, 112…it pains me too much to even go any further. SERIOUSLY????? Those are the runner ups for best male R&B group of ALL TIME. No, No, No, No, No!
If you even want to be in the running for best male R&B group of all time you can’t do that without longevity. You can’t be in the running for best male R&B group of all time and have only been a group for less than 10 years. R. Kelly & Public Announcement was that even 5 years???? You can be in the running for “good” male R&B group but not ‘best”.
Now, New Edition, did make the list for her Facebook responses and that choice, I’m willing to accept. I don’t agree, but I can accept the notion. The brothers have been around for years, their music is timeless and people will still pay to see these brothers perform…I sure would.
Now there are some timeless male R&B groups, that initially come to mind. The Temptations, The Ojays, Parliament, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, the Gap Band, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, Slave, The Dells, The Time, Main Ingredient…the list could go on.
Ms. G’s answer for best Male R&B group of all time leaves room for two top contenders: Maze featuring Frankie Beverly and The Isley Brothers. These two groups although not given the props that they should have been given, are the truth. Whether a sad, happy, sexy or melancholy mood, the music from these two groups are the answer.
If I had to make a choice, Maze would take home the title. Thirty plus years and these brothers still sell out an arena based off of music they created in the seventies. That is what makes you the best male R&B group of all time. HAPPY FEELINGS!!!!
I want to hear from you family…agree, disagree or have a better answer.
